The law protects the relationship between a client and a psychotherapist. Information cannot be disclosed without written permission.
Exceptions include:
- Child abuse or dependent adult or elder abuse. I am required by law to report abuse or neglect of a child, elder, or vulnerable adult.
- Danger to self or others. If a client expresses a clear and credible threat to harm themself or someone else, I am required by law to take action to protect them and those around them, which may result in the client being hospitalized. I have the duty to warn anyone who may be in imminent danger as a result of an imminent threat. If a client intends to harm themself, I will make every effort to enlist their cooperation in ensuring their safety. If they do not cooperate, I will take further measures without their permission that are provided to me by law in order to ensure their safety.
- Court order. A court order may compel me to disclose information in legal proceedings.
